What is Radial Histories?

Radial Histories, a six-part audio miniseries produced by Sharjah Art Foundation, weaves together oral histories, archival sound and scholarly commentary to narrate untold stories about visual art in Sharjah and the wider UAE from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, just before the inception of the Sharjah Biennial.

In this episode, host May Alqaydi and researchers Kamayani Sharma and Hasan Hujairi reflect together on the conceptual arc traced across Radial Histories. Their discussion revisits regional solidarities and the formation of local institutions, situating these developments within wider political currents, including Pan-Arabism, Cold War alignments and postcolonial exchange. Framing the period through internationalism rather than globalisation, the episode reconsiders these histories on their own terms—highlighting a pre-Sharjah Biennial art ecology that was already outward-looking, interconnected and fully in dialogue with the world.

تجمع السلسلة الصوتية القصيرة "تواريخ ممتدة"، المؤلفة من ست حلقات ومن إنتاج مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون، بين التاريخ الشفاهي والتسجيلات الأرشيفية والتحليل الأكاديمي، لتسرد حكايات غير مروية عن الفنون البصرية في الشارقة ودولة الإمارات عموماً من أوائل ستينيات القرن الماضي حتى أوائل التسعينيات، قبيل انطلاق بينالي الشارقة.

في هذه الحلقة، تحاور المقدّمة مي القايدي كلاً من الباحثة كاماياني شارما والباحث حسن الحجيري لاستعادة المسار المفاهيمي الذي ترسمه "تواريخ متقاطعة". يتناول النقاش أشكال التضامن الإقليمي وتشكّل المؤسسات المحلية، واضعاً هذه التحوّلات ضمن سياقات سياسية أوسع تشمل القومية العربية واصطفافات الحرب الباردة وتبادلات ما بعد الاستعمار. ومن خلال مقاربة هذه المرحلة من منظور دولي عابر للحدود، تعيد الحلقة قراءة تلك التواريخ في سياقاتها الخاصة، كاشفةً عن بيئة فنية سبقت انطلاق بينالي الشارقة، واتسمت بانفتاحها وترابطها وحضورها الفاعل في حوار متواصل مع العالم.

CHAPTER 06: Afterword

Radial Histories, a six-part audio miniseries produced by Sharjah Art Foundation, weaves together oral histories, archival sound and scholarly commentary to narrate untold stories about visual art in Sharjah and the wider UAE from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, just before the inception of the Sharjah Biennial.

In the 1980s, Sharjah was witness to the rise of experimental practices and leftist thought as well as the tussle between institutional frameworks and independent initiatives. Featuring conversations with Yousif Aydabi, Khalid Albudoor, Mohammed Kazem and Aisha Stoby, this episode traces how artists and writers navigated a rapidly evolving artistic landscape. Central to this moment was the Aqwas collective, whose self-published journal Silsilat Al Ramad challenged dominant artistic norms through experimental poetry and visual work. These practices were informed by socialist and Marxist ideas circulating through Arab intellectual networks and Cold War geopolitical circuits. The Arabic-language newspaper Al Khaleej also fostered critical debate, despite tensions around censorship and publishing restrictions. Through these intersecting narratives, we see how Sharjah became a site of both creative resistance and ideological plurality.

شهدت الشارقة في ثمانينيات القرن الماضي، صعود الممارسات التجريبية والأفكار اليسارية، إلى جانب احتدام التفاعل بين الأطر المؤسسية والمبادرات المستقلة. ومن خلال حوارات مع يوسف عيدابي، وخالد البدور، ومحمد كاظم، وعائشة ستوبي، تتتبّع هذه الحلقة كيفية تعامل الفنانين والكتّاب مع مشهد فني يتطوّر بوتيرة متسارعة. شكّلت مجموعة "أقواس" محوراً أساسياً في هذه المرحلة، حيث قدّمت من خلال مجلتها الصادرة ذاتياً "سلسلة الرماد" مقاربات تجريبية في الشعر والعمل البصري، وأسهمت في مساءلة الأنماط الفنية السائدة. واستندت هذه الممارسات إلى أفكار اشتراكية وماركسية انتشرت عبر شبكات فكرية عربية ومسارات جيوسياسية مرتبطة بالحرب الباردة. كما أسهمت صحيفة الخليج في تعزيز النقاش النقدي، في ظل توترات مرتبطة بالرقابة وقيود النشر. ومن خلال تلاقي هذه السرديات، تتبدّى الشارقة فضاءً يجمع بين المقاومة الإبداعية وتعدّد الرؤى الفكرية.

Radial Histories, a six-part audio miniseries produced by Sharjah Art Foundation, weaves together oral histories, archival sound and scholarly commentary to narrate untold stories about visual art in Sharjah and the wider UAE from the early&nbsp;1960s to the early&nbsp;1990s, just before the inception of the Sharjah Biennial.
In the 1980s, Sharjah was witness to the rise of experimental practices and leftist thought as well as the tussle between institutional frameworks and independent initiatives. Featuring conversations with Yousif Aydabi, Khalid Albudoor, Mohammed Kazem and Aisha Stoby, this episode traces how artists and writers navigated a rapidly evolving artistic landscape. Central to this moment was the Aqwas collective, whose self-published journal Silsilat Al Ramad challenged dominant artistic norms through experimental poetry and visual work. These practices were informed by socialist and Marxist ideas circulating through Arab intellectual networks and Cold War geopolitical circuits. The Arabic-language newspaper Al Khaleej also fostered critical debate, despite tensions around censorship and publishing restrictions. Through these intersecting narratives, we see how Sharjah became a site of both creative resistance and ideological plurality.

CHAPTER 05: The 1980s—The Years Before the Biennial

Radial Histories, a six-part audio miniseries produced by Sharjah Art Foundation, weaves together oral histories, archival sound and scholarly commentary to narrate untold stories about visual art in Sharjah and the wider UAE from the early 1960s to the early 1990s, just before the inception of the Sharjah Biennial.

This chapter explores the vibrant artistic landscape of Sharjah during the 1980s, a decade marked by experimentation, collaboration and the return of artists trained overseas. Through the voices of artists and writers, including Najat Makki, Mohammed Kazem, Mohamed Yousif, Abdulraheem Salim, Ali Al Abdan and Khalid Albudoor, the episode reveals how artist collectives, cultural clubs and informal ateliers shaped a cosmopolitan visual arts ecology shaped by both local and émigré participants. These independent initiatives paralleled and intersected with state-supported exchange with regional neighbours through Gulf Cooperation Council Youth exhibitions and distant nations such as the Soviet Union. Aisha Stoby places Sharjah’s effervescence in the context of Gulf-wide art historical developments that are relevant even today.

تستكشف هذه الحلقة المشهد الفني الحيوي في الشارقة خلال ثمانينيات القرن الماضي، وهو عقد اتسم بالتجريب والتعاون وعودة الفنانين الذين تلقّوا تدريبهم في الخارج. ومن خلال أصوات فنانين وكتّاب، من بينهم نجاة مكي، ومحمد كاظم، ومحمد يوسف، وعبد الرحيم سالم، وعلي العبدان، وخالد البدور، تكشف الحلقة كيف أسهمت تجمعات الفنانين والأندية الثقافية والاستوديوهات الفنية غير الرسمية في تشكيل بيئة بصرية كوزموبوليتية، شارك في صياغتها فنانون محليون ومقيمون. توازت هذه المبادرات المستقلة وتقاطعت مع برامج التبادل الثقافي المدعومة من الدولة، سواء مع دول الجوار الإقليمي عبر معارض شباب مجلس التعاون الخليجي، أو مع بلدان أبعد مثل الاتحاد السوفياتي. تضع عائشة ستوبي هذا الحراك الحيوي في الشارقة ضمن سياق أوسع من التحولات التاريخية الفنية في الخليج، وهي تحولات لا تزال أصداؤها حاضرة حتى اليوم.

Radial Histories, a six-part audio miniseries produced by Sharjah Art Foundation, weaves together oral histories, archival sound and scholarly commentary to narrate untold stories about visual art in Sharjah and the wider UAE from the early&nbsp;1960s to the early&nbsp;1990s, just before the inception of the Sharjah Biennial.
This chapter explores the vibrant artistic landscape of Sharjah during the 1980s, a decade marked by experimentation, collaboration and the return of artists trained overseas. Through the voices of artists and writers, including Najat Makki, Mohammed Kazem, Mohamed Yousif, Abdulraheem Salim, Ali Al Abdan and Khalid Albudoor, the episode reveals how artist collectives, cultural clubs and informal ateliers shaped a cosmopolitan visual arts ecology shaped by both local and &eacute;migr&eacute; participants. These independent initiatives paralleled and intersected with state-supported exchange with regional neighbours through Gulf Cooperation Council Youth exhibitions and distant nations such as the Soviet Union. Aisha Stoby places Sharjah&rsquo;s effervescence in the context of Gulf-wide art historical developments that are relevant even today.&nbsp;

تجمع السلسلة الصوتية القصيرة "تواريخ ممتدة"، المؤلفة من ست حلقات ومن إنتاج مؤسسة الشارقة للفنون، بين التاريخ الشفاهي والتسجيلات الأرشيفية والتحليل الأكاديمي، لتسرد حكايات غير مروية عن الفنون البصرية في الشارقة ودولة الإمارات عموماً من أوائل ستينيات القرن الماضي حتى أوائل التسعينيات، قبيل انطلاق بينالي الشارقة.
