Few people can explain the hidden cost of childhood fame quite like Christy Carlson Romano. As Ren Stevens on Even Stevens, the voice of Kim Possible, and the star of Cadet Kelly, she helped define a generation of Disney Channel. But behind the scenes, she was losing something far more important than her childhood: her sense of self. Now, in her memoir Once Upon a Train Wreck, Christy is unpacking why child stardom can be so psychologically damaging, from the relentless rejection and pressure to perform to complicated family dynamics, financial betrayal, and addiction. She joins Danielle Robay to reveal what really happened behind the Disney Channel curtain and explain why becoming a mother finally taught her that love isn't something you have to earn. In this episode, she shares:
What life was really like behind the scenes at Disney Channel, and why former child stars rarely talk openly about their experiences.
Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, and the privilege of saying no: Why some Disney stars had choices Christy never felt she had.
The Anne Hathaway and Princess Diaries controversy: What really happened with the audition she missed and the viral video that took on a life of its own.
Where did Christy's Disney Channel money go? The financial revelations that led to a year of no contact with her family.
The $20,000+ psychic experience: How Christy ended up spending a small fortune on a psychic during one of the most vulnerable periods of her life.
Childhood fame, trauma, and addiction: Why Christy compares the psychological toll of child stardom to CTE in professional athletes.
The loneliness behind her drinking: How motherhood and couples counseling helped Christy confront her relationship with alcohol.
Jennette McCurdy and I'm Glad My Mom Died: Why reading another child star's story helped Christy understand her own.
Breaking the cycle with her daughters: How her complicated relationship with her mother shaped the parent she wants to be.
Is child stardom Hollywood’s version of CTE? Why Christy compares the lasting psychological effects of childhood fame to the brain trauma experienced by professional athletes.
Redefining success after Disney: Why Christy considers this the most successful chapter of her life, even without the fame she once had.
