"When life trauma strikes, people cannot just knock on a door and magically recover. Recovery requires human connection, targeted support, and a society that refuses to let people fall through the cracks. But right now, that entire safety net is under direct threat."
In this candid, high-stakes conversation on ¿Qué Pasa Boston?, executive producer and host Gabriela Salas sits down with Jean Yang, CEO of Vinfen, to pull back the curtain on one of the most pressing yet overlooked crises across Massachusetts: the breaking point of community mental health, behavioral care, and disability support systems.
From arriving in the United States over 30 years ago as a first-generation immigrant from China to graduating from Harvard and leading an organization with 3,500 staff across 500 sites serving 10,000+ individuals, Jean brings an unflinching perspective on what it takes to protect the frontline.
Together, Gabriela and Jean tackle the hard truths that impact every family, taxpayer, and neighborhood:
The Invisible Reality of Community Care: How residential group homes provide dignity, independence, and life skills for adults with intellectual disabilities, brain injuries, and severe mental illness.
The Cultural Trust Gap: Why minority, Black, Brown, and immigrant families suffer disproportionately from behavioral health stigmas and the critical shortage of Spanish and Portuguese-speaking providers.
The Workforce Emergency: The true cost of 20% vacancy and turnover rates on the frontlines when state reimbursement wages cannot compete with the commercial market.
Question 5 & The State Budget Threat: Why Question 5 on the Massachusetts ballot could trigger tens of millions in tax rebates out of state reserves during revenue shortfalls—and how that directly threatens life-saving safety-net services.
Modernizing Care Without Losing Humanity: The launch of Lowell's Middlesex County Restoration Center, creating 24/7 "no wrong door" diversion for mental health and substance crises.

Whether you have a family member relying on behavioral care or care about the health and economic future of Massachusetts, this episode is an essential guide to the decisions shaping our communities.
