Healthcare facility staffing shortages are real, and by many accounts, they are likely to get worse. Consider this: The American Association of Colleges of Nursing reports a projected shortage of 78,610 full-time RNs this year. A March 2024 survey by the American Health Care Association found that 99 percent of nursing homes currently have open positions, and 89 percent are recruiting for registered nurses. Seventy-two percent of nursing homes said their current workforce levels remained below pre-pandemic levels, and 66 percent of survey respondents expressed that concern that they may have to close their doors if their workforce challenges persist.
In this episode, Patrick Archambeault, Assistant Director of IPRO’s Healthcare Quality Improvement Program, talks about the scope of this issue, its impact, and some potential ways to address it.
