Countdown to COP28: What is the UAE's Role?

Two-thirds of the world's population - 6.2 billion people -may live in cities by 2050. Cities presently produce 70% of the world's garbage and use roughly 80% of its energy. These revelations emphasize the need to change how cities evolve more firmly than ever and, at the same time, highlight several questions, including, Does the way our cities are designed affect their sustainability? What does it mean for a city to be sustainable? Plus more.

In this episode, Suzanne Ghadanfar discusses sustainability-related reconstruction and answers these and other concerns.

Suzanne Ghadanfar is a research fellow for the MSc program in Islamic Art, Architecture, and Urbanism. She holds a BSc. In Architectural Engineering and an MSc. in Urban Planning with over 15 years of working experience. 

Prior to joining HBKU, Suzanne worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Architectural Engineering in Aleppo, Syria. In addition, she has extensive working experience in designing and supervising architectural and urban planning projects with local and international design firms in Syria and the region. 

Her research work follows an interdisciplinary approach integrating concepts and theories from disciplines related to urban planning, architecture, sociology, social geography, and urban management and governance. She is interested in exploring the socioeconomic aspects that impact the built environment in post-conflict and post-disaster settings, and especially the role of community participation in shaping urban development. 

Suzanne is actively involved in local, regional, and international research activities and conferences. Recently, she presented her research paper on urban transformation and the emergence of inequality in Aleppo during the COVID-19 pandemic at a workshop organized by UCL's Bartlett Development Planning Unit in London. She has authored several publications and is currently co-editing a book with Dr. Akel Kahera and Dr. Sultan Barakat on "Strategic Rebuilding and Affordable Housing in the Muslim World."

Reconstructing Toward Sustainability

وفقًا لـالأمم المتحدة 55% من سكان العالم اليوم يعيشون في المناطق الحضرية، وهي نسبة من المتوقع أن ترتفع إلى 68% بحلول عام 2050. أيضًا المدن مسؤولة بالفعل عن ٧٠% من النفايات العالمية وتستهلك ما يقرب من 80% من طاقة العالم! 
تؤكد تلك الأرقام بقوة أكبر من أي وقت مضى إلى الحاجة إلى تغيير كيفية تطور المدن، وفي الوقت نفسه، تُسلط الضوء على عدد من الأسئلة مثل هل تؤثر طريقة بناء المدن على نظام الاستدامة بها؟ وماذا يعني أن تكون مدينة ما مُستدامة؟ وغيرها من الأسئلة. 

في هذه الحلقة تُخبرنا سوزان غضنفر عن إعادة الإعمار والاستدامة، كما تُجيبنا عن تلك الأسئلة وغيرها.

تعمل سوزانا كزميلة باحثة في برنامج ماجستير العلوم في الفن والعمارة الإسلامية والعمران ، وحاصلة على درجة البكالوريوس في الهندسة المعمارية ودرجة الماجستير في التخطيط العمراني بخبرة عملية تفوق ال15 عاماً. 

قبل انضمامها جامعة حمد بن خليفة عملت كمعلم مساعد في جامعة الهندسة المعمارية في حلب في سوريا، كما لديها خبرة عملية واسعة في التصميم والاشراف على مشاريع التخطيط المعماري والعمراني مع مؤسسات محلية ودولية في سوريا والمنطقة. 

يتبع عملها البحثي نهجًا متعدد التخصصات يدمج المفاهيم والنظريات من التخصصات المتعلقة بالتخطيط العمراني والعمارة وعلم الاجتماع والجغرافيا الاجتماعية والإدارة الحضرية والحوكمة. مهتمة في استكشاف الجوانب الاجتماعية والاقتصادية التي تؤثر على البيئة المبنية في ظروف ما بعد الصراع وما بعد الكوارث، وتحديداً دور المجتمع في المساهمة في تشكيل التنمية الحضرية.

لها دور فعال في الأنشطة البحثية المحلية والإقليمية والدولية، وشاركت في العديد من المؤتمرات الدولية، كما قدمت مؤخرًا ورقتها البحثية حول التغيرات الحضرية وما نتج عنها من أشكال عدم المساواة خلال جائحة كورونا في ورشة عمل نظمتها وحدة التخطيط التنموي  بارتليت في كلية لندن الجامعية في لندن. قامت بتأليف العديد من المنشورات وتشارك حاليًا في تحرير كتاب مع الدكتور عقل قاهرة والدكتور سلطان بركات حول "إعادة البناء الاستراتيجي والإسكان الميسور التكلفة في العالم الإسلامي".

يُقدر حجم خسائر الدول العربية الناجم عن تجاهل إعادة تدوير النفايات كل عام بنحو خمسة مليارات دولار سنويًا وفقًا لدراسة صادرة من "جامعة الدول العربية"! أيضًا تواجه شركات إعادة التدوير تحديات كبيرة في الحصول على كمية كافية من النفايات لإعادة تدويرها، فكيف يمكننا تحويل النفايات من عبء بيئي إلى مورد اقتصادي؟

يُجيبنا في هذه الحلقة الدكتور طارق الأنصاري على هذا التساؤل كما  يُحدثنا عن منصة كيو كونز والحلول المبتكرة التي تقدمها في هذا الصدد!

الدكتور طارق الأنصاري أستاذ مشارك ورئيس قسم التنمية المستدامة بجامعة حمد بن خليفة. أكمل درجة البكالوريوس في الهندسة الميكانيكية من جامعة لندن عام 2008، وحصل على درجة الماجستير في الهندسة من أجل التنمية المستدامة من جامعة كامبريدج عام 2011، ثم حصل على درجة الدكتوراه في التنمية المستدامة والهندسة البيئية من كلية إمبريال كوليدج لندن عام 2016، وكان عنوان أطروحته: "تطوير نموذج أنظمة الطاقة والمياه والغذاء".
عمل الدكتور الأنصاري سابقًا في شركة قطر للطاقة في مشروع مياه التبريد المشترك ومشروع غاز برزان، كما عمل مستشارًا تقنيًا في برنامج الأمن الغذائي القطري.

Recycling companies also struggle to find enough waste to recycle, making their mission even more challenging. But what if we could transform waste into opportunities? 

In this episode, we dive into the world of QKONs and explore their innovative solutions to this pressing issue with Dr. Tareq Al-Ansari. 

Dr. Tareq Al-Ansari is an associate professor and head of the division of sustainable development. 
Dr. Al-Ansari completed his B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from the University College of London (2008), an MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development from the University of Cambridge (2011), and completed his PhD at Imperial College London in Sustainable Development and Environmental Engineering (2016). His thesis was titled: "The Development of the Energy, Water and Food Nexus Systems Model".
Previously, Dr. Al-Ansari worked at Qatar Energy in the common cooling water project and the Barzan Gas Project. He has also served as a technical advisor at the Qatar National Food Security Program. 

Dr. Tareq's research portfolio includes; multi-generation systems, clean fuels, energy, water and food nexus, food security, design of sustainable and intelligent food systems, circular economies, CO2 utilisation, and conversion of waste into value-added products through gasification and pyrolysis.

الدكتورة منى حاصلة على درجة الدكتوراه في التنمية المستدامة من كلية العلوم والهندسة من جامعة حمد بن خليفة، وعلى درجة الماجستير في نظم المعلومات من كلية الهندسة، ودرجة البكالوريوس في الإحصاء من كلية العلوم  جامعة قطر.

 نشرت الدكتورة منى العديد من المقالات في مجلّات دولية مختلفة ، بما في ذلك الأوراق البحثية وفصول من الكتب ، بالإضافة إلى مساهماتها في المؤتمرات. علاوة على ذلك ، فقد مثلت دولة قطر في عدة لجان محلية ودولية ، مثل التعليم للجميع (EFA) في اليونسكو. تركزت اهتماماتها البحثية على استراتيجيات وأطر تقييم الأداء من منظور التعليم من أجل التنمية المستدامة (ESD) ونظام التعليم في قطر. 

بدأت الدكتورة منى حياتها المهنية مع مؤسسة قطر في الصندوق القطري لرعاية البحث العلمي (QNRF) كخبير إحصائي ، حيث ركزت على التنقيب عن البيانات في سياق المؤشرات التعليمية والبحثية. ثم انضمت بعد ذلك إلى الإستراتيجية والإدارة والشراكات في قطاع التعليم العالي بمؤسسة قطر كأخصائي أول في تحليل البيانات وتقييم الأثر.

 نشرت الدكتورة منى العديد من المقالات في مجلّات دولية مختلفة ، بما في ذلك الأوراق البحثية وفصول من الكتب ، بالإضافة إلى مساهماتها في المؤتمرات. علاوة على ذلك ، فقد مثلت دولة قطر في عدة لجان محلية ودولية ، مثل التعليم للجميع (EFA) في اليونسكو. تركزت اهتماماتها البحثية على استراتيجيات وأطر تقييم الأداء من منظور التعليم من أجل التنمية المستدامة (ESD) ونظام التعليم في قطر. 
بدأت الدكتورة منى حياتها المهنية مع مؤسسة قطر في الصندوق القطري لرعاية البحث العلمي (QNRF) كخبير إحصائي ، حيث ركزت على التنقيب عن البيانات في سياق المؤشرات التعليمية والبحثية. ثم انضمت بعد ذلك إلى الإستراتيجية والإدارة والشراكات في قطاع التعليم العالي بمؤسسة قطر كأخصائي أول في تحليل البيانات وتقييم الأثر.

In this episode, Dr. Mona Mattar Al-Kuwari answers these questions and tells us more about assessing education for sustainability.

Dr Mona Al‐Kuwari holds a PhD in Sustainability Studies from the Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU). Dr. Mona has published in international journals and contributed book chapters, as well as conference contributions. She has represented Qatar in multiple committees globally and locally, such as with Education for All (EFA) in UNESCO. 
Her main research interests focus on performance assessment strategies and frameworks in the context of the Education for sustainable development (ESD) and within Qatar’s Education System specifically.
 Dr. Mona started her career with Qatar Foundation at Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) as a statistician; Dr Mona then joined Strategy, Management and Partnerships in Higher Education at the Foundation as a Senior Data Analytics & Impact Assessment Specialist.

International environmental law is at the forefront of the fight against climate change and the transition to a sustainable future. 
From treaties to jurisprudence and doctrine, it offers a legal framework for promoting green economic systems. However, creating a balance between profit interests, social constraints, and environmental sustainability presents challenges. 
In this episode, Dr. Chougrani El Houcine tells us more about the critical role of international law in paving the way for a better future!

Dr. El Houcine Chougrani is an Associate Professor of International Law and International Relations at the Cadi Ayyad University of Marrakech. He is the Director of the Moroccan Observatory for Future Generations (MOROFUGE), a Member of the International Research Center for Crisis Management, and the General Director of the Arab Journal of International Law. His main research areas cover international environmental law, water, climate justice, and the rights of future generations. His professional experience also includes serving as Accountant General at the Ministry of Economy and Finance (2002-2014).
