Zimbabwe's cabinet approves plan to extend president's term in office through constitutional amendment

View descriptionShare

Zimbabwe’s cabinet has officially backed draft legislation aimed at amending the constitution to extend presidential terms from five to seven years. This pivotal change would effectively allow President Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in office until 2030. According to a cabinet statement, the amendments are intended to "enhance political stability and policy continuity," theoretically providing the government with the necessary timeframe to see long-term development programs through to completion. Mondli Makhanya spoke to Temba Mliswa, Former Member of the National Assembly of Zimbabwe.
