World Literacy Day: South Africa’s Literacy Rate

In celebration of World Literacy Day, stories about South Africa’s poor literacy rates take the spotlight. Civil society is urging for an overhaul of the education system in light of shockingly low literacy levels in SA schools. According to the 2016 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS). 80% of Grade 4 learners are unable to read for meaning across all South African languages.
