The 2019 general elections have seen the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) electoral support dwindle.
The party lost five seats in the National Assembly and was also ousted as the official opposition in Mpumalanga and KwaZulu Natal.
“It was a bad performance by every potential measure. Not only did they lose some of their core base support to the Freedom Front Plus, but they also failed to grow in any significant way among black voters, particularly in large urban growth centres like Gauteng,” head of politics and governance at IRR Gareth van Onselen says.
His sentiments were shared by political analyst Lukhona Mnguni who says the party undid the momentum it had from previous general elections.
“They failed dismally. You would have expected them that being incumbent in two metros [in Gauteng] that they would take that forward and build momentum,” Mnguni says.
The two experts spoke to Aldrin Sampear on POWER Talk.
