EFF leader Julius Malema reiterated during a briefing on Wednesday afternoon, that the National Shutdown planned for next Monday is set in stone. He said the party will be facilitating a peaceful strike, but further cautioned small business owners and companies across the country to close their doors for the day, citing that everything must come to a standstill in a bid to shift the country’s trajectory. There has been a lot of criticism, not only from the DA but from people who are saying they want to go to work on Monday and are weary that the shutdown will prevent that. Thus, brings forth the issue of the Labour Relations Act and what it says about protest action in Section 77. While the section is primarily focused on bringing disputing parties together for further engagement, it also lays out the rules of protest action to prevent strikes that are burdensome to workers, employers and South Africa’s economy overall.
