View of the World: 2024 – An Election Year for 50 Countries Around the World

According to The Center for American Progress, a US policy institute, more than 2 billion voters in 50 countries worldwide will be casting their votes. In the United States, a whopping 160 million Americans are registered to vote, and on November 5th, they will be choosing the 60th US president. Over in India, the world's largest election is set to take place between April and May 2024, with a staggering 900 million registered voters out of a population of 1.4 billion. Meanwhile, Mexico is gearing up for its election on June 2, boasting nearly 100 million registered voters. In the European Union, elections for the European Parliament are scheduled from June 6 to 9, 2024. Closer to home, our election is expected to be a pivotal moment, with 26 million South Africans registered to vote – the most significant in the country for the past 30 years. On today's "View of the World," we'll delve into the major international players heading to the polls this year, exploring the expectations and potential geopolitical shifts that might arise from significant changes in political leadership.
