According to the South African Institution of Civil Engineering’s (SAICE) 2022 Infrastructure Report Card, there is currently no reliable database on the lengths and ownerships of roads in the country. The report further reveals that secondary and tertiary roads are undergoing accelerated deterioration, we know, to the point where efficiency and the cost of moving freight on the road are causing various logistical companies severe challenges because the state of the roads compromise driver safety. Added to that is the overloading of roads and poor stormwater management along with the gravel road network which is deemed to be too extensive alongside a constrained budget for the entire road map in the country to be kept in a satisfactory condition. Reginald Demana, CEO of the national road agency Sanral, joins Lerato Mbele for this week’s view of the nation.
