In the 2022 Road Safety report by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), South Africa's vehicle population surged by 2.04%, surpassing 12.9 million. The extensive 750,000 km road network grapples with the acknowledged challenges posed by the growing number of vehicles on the road. Despite Prasa's December announcement resurrecting the Shosholoza Meyl routes at an affordable cost, persisting challenges surfaced during the inaugural trip to Cape Town. Cable theft forced a premature end, leading to the service's discreet cancellation—a recurrent setback in recent rail revival attempts. Simultaneously, Johannesburg's Rea Vaya Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system, initiated pre-2010 World Cup, now faces business rescue. While optimism surrounds Rea Vaya's future, the Sandton Rea Vaya project – expected to be completed this year – has reached silent status, with the vanishing R70 million bicycle lane project, announced in 2016, raising concerns. These situations prompt critical questions about the planning of the country's public transport network, the development of a fully integrated public transport system encompassing all modes, and the effectiveness of public transport policy and its implementation. These are the issues we'll be delving into on today's edition of The View of the Nation. Director of Smart Mobility at Royal HaskoningDHV Bongani Mthombeni and Senior Researcher and UNESCO Oliver Tambo Chair of Human Rights at the University of Fort Hare Dr Siyabulela Fobosi join Lerato Mbele for the conversation.

Mondli Makhanya is in conversation with Sol Plaatje University founder and chairman of Brand Africa and chancellor, Thebe Ikalafeng.
