Unpacking the implications of delayed judgements in South Africa

View descriptionShare

Last week the Judicial Service Commission (JSC), recommended that the president suspend two judges, Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela and Judge Nomonde Mngqibisa-Thusi immediately, for failing to deliver their judgments on time. The judges are said to have dozens of outstanding judgements which are way beyond the time limits prescribed by judicial norms and standards that judgements must be handed down within three months. Complaints against Judge Maumela, who is the presiding judge of the Senzo Meyiwa case, involves 12 judgements which have been outstanding from 24 to 26 months. Today, we want to dissect the reasons behind these delayed judgements and how they affect the country’s judicial system along with victims. Advocate Paul Hoffman, Director of Accountability Now along with legal analyst, Mpumelelo Zikalala and Jeanne Bodenstein, Head of the Rape Survivors Justice Campaign at Rape Crisis join Lerato Mbele for the conversation.
