Born on September 26th in1936, the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela known as “mother of the nation” , remains an icon in South Africa’s political history. Considered a hero, she survived threats, imprisonment, arrest, harassment, 491 days in solitary confinement and two trials. Winnie was an anti-apartheid activist in her own right, in addition to being married to icon and South Africa's first black president, Nelson Mandela.
