Two weeks ago, a TikTok video featuring an Australian influencer advocating for birth tourism garnered attention. In the video, she shared her experience of travelling to Costa Rica for childbirth, emphasising that "Birthright citizenship is the most accessible way to obtain an extra passport”. Birth tourism involves journeying to another country to give birth, primarily to secure citizenship for the child through a birthright. Such children, often dubbed "anchor babies," aid their parents in obtaining permanent residency. Motivations for birth tourism include access to education, healthcare, future parental sponsorship, and even circumventing China's two-child policy. Popular destinations include the United States, Canada, and Hong Kong, where mainland Chinese citizens seek the right of abode for their children. This discussion aims to unravel the complexities of this growing phenomenon, shedding light on the various reasons driving individuals to engage in birth tourism. Founder and Managing Director of LM Visa and Immigration Solutions Lerato Mahupelo joins Lerato Mbele for the conversation.
