The Independence of the Ballot #29May2024

View descriptionShare

We're just 64 days away from South Africa's national election on May 29. This time around, voters will be dealing with three different coloured ballot papers instead of the usual two. Each paper signifies a distinct aspect of their vote: the national ballot for the National Assembly, a regional ballot also for the National Assembly and lastly, a provincial ballot for the Provincial Legislature. In terms of the numbers, a staggering 27.72 million people have registered to vote in the 2024 general elections, marking a significant increase of nearly one million from the 2019 elections. Additionally, there are 23,292 voting stations across the country. Yet, as we approach this critical juncture, lingering questions persist regarding the impartiality of the voting process and the Independent Electoral Commission's ability to guarantee a fair election. Independent Electoral Analyst Michael Atkins joins Lerato Mbele for the conversation.
