More than 2 700 girls, aged between 10 and 14, are now mothers after giving birth at public healthcare facilities across the country during the 2023/24 financial year. This is according to figures released by the national health department. Kwazulu-Natal had the most pregnancies in this age group with 610, followed by Gauteng 430, the Eastern Cape 395 and Limpopo 375. Mpumalanga had 293 births, the Western Cape 286, North West 151, Free State 106 and Northern Cape 70.

Many Gauteng residents grapple with the realities of not having decent houses, some bear the brunt of poor living conditions within informal settlements that have mushroomed over the years. The ‘Father of Soweto’, James Sofasonke Mpanza is a social activist and a champion for black South Africans to have homes. He founded the Sofasonke Party with the slogan “Housing and Shelter for All” in 1935. It was this time (April) 1944 that James persuaded over 8 000 people to make a new squatter camp called Sofasonke Township. James had led the land invasion that resulted in the founding of modern Soweto, the Soweto we know today.
