South Africa’s Nursing Skills Shortage

View descriptionShare

Today is International Nurses Day. In South Africa the nursing skills shortage is being described as a ticking time bomb because amongst other issues, the country has one nurse for an estimated 218 people. According to a study, of these, less than a third are under the age of 40 which means that in 15 years, about 47% of all nurses will have retired. The current nursing shortage has been estimated at over 26 000 with this number anticipated to reach over 100 000 by 2030 in the country. Joining Nhlanhla Sehume to unpack this issue is spokesperson for the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (Denosa), Sibongiseni Delihlazo and education executive at Life Healthcare, Dr Sharon Vasuthevan.
