Ramaphosa can't fire all the bad eggs: Analyst

View descriptionShare

Getting rid of ministers implicated in corruption and wrongdoing is a not a simple exercise for the President Cyril Ramaposa.

So says political analyst, Dr Ntsikeleo Breakfast speaking on POWER Talk.

Providing context, he says Ramaphosa won by a small margin at the ANC’s 54 conference last year.

Speaking of Ramaphosa’s cabinet reshuffle in February, he says:

“He [Ramaphosa] tried to tread carefully and not rock the boat because if he fired all the people implicated in corruption, he might be reinforcing the argument that he’s purging some people.

“He was very strategic in letting go of cabinet ministers. He went only for soft targets like just to convey the message that he’s taking a stand against corruption.”

He says it’s not easy to boot out  cabinet ministers like Nomvula Mokonyane and Bathabile Dlamini because they have "political capital and they are popular".

With elections around the corner, he adds, the president can’t get rid of all the ministers implicated in corruption as this will impact the electoral machinery of the ANC.

“The president must let go of other and keep others to strike a balance.”

If he fires ministers based on public pressure he might be unpopular within the ANC that’s very fragile at the moment.

Meanwhile the DA is putting pressure on Ramaphosa to fire embattled ministers Bathabile Dlamini and Malusi Gigaba.

The party says keeping them in cabinet is irrational and legally indefensible.

DA also wants the ministers to pay for legal fees from their pockets while fighting cases brought against them.
