Municipal Billing and the City of Johannesburg

View descriptionShare

The primary responsibility of a municipality is to deliver services. This is what the municipality’s “business” is about. Section 75 of the Municipal Systems Act 2000, (Act No. 32 of 2000) allow municipalities to levy and recover fees, charges or tariffs in respect of municipal service delivery functions and to recover collections charges and interest on outstanding amounts. Furthermore, section 96 of the Municipal System Act, requires municipalities to collect all money that is due and payable to them. Through the revenue customer services centre, the city is responsible for collecting the revenues vital to the smooth functioning of Johannesburg. Every month the City sends out over a million accounts to all of its residents, charging for electricity and water supplies, for waste collection, and for property taxes, more commonly known as rates. In this conversation, we speak about billing at the City of Johannesburg. Group Head of the Revenue Department at the City of Johannesburg Malope Ramagaga joins Lerato Mbele for the conversation.
