The new milestones for health and safety in South African mining for the next decade are doable and will be driven by technological advances. The mine labour force is also likely to shrink, meaning fewer miners will be in harm’s way. South Africa’s mining sector, the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources, and trade unions agreed last week at the tripartite health and safety summit on new goals to be reached over the next decade with the ultimate goal being “Zero Harm”.
