Masterclass #LevelUp Series – Sport as a Platform for Nationalism

View descriptionShare

In 1995, a year after South Africa entered a democracy, we hosted our first Rugby World Cup at Ellis Park and won. It is remembered as the country’s first major sporting event since the end of Apartheid. In sociological and political studies, the relationship between sports, nationalism and national identity is an integral issue. Professor of Sport in England, Dr Eric Anderson has argued that the importance of sport in the expression of nationalism is linked to its ability to bring an “imagined community” of a nation to life. This is simply because when a game of note is being played by a country’s respected national team, it doesn’t matter, even if for a moment, the differences on has from the person next to them; what matters most is the unified support towards one mission: a victory. On today’s instalment of the #LevelUp Masterclass Series we’re looking at sports as a facilitator of nationalism and what we need to do to take our national sports to the next level with the President of Netballl South Africa, Cecila Molokwane.
