It is a widely held opinion in the cyber security industry that South Africa is on the brink of becoming the cybercrime capital of the African continent. Cybercrimes can be committed by anybody who has a cellphone and an internet connection, but there are also organised crime groups that make use of advanced technology and use psychological tactics to part people with their hard-earned cash. The crimes come in different forms and can target individuals with low digital literacy and businesses with advanced cyber security defences. South Africans are being increasingly targetted by scammers and fraudsters over popular communication app WhatsApp. Carey van Vlaanderen, the CEO of ESET Southern Africa, said there are 23 million WhatsApp users in South Africa; however, it is also a popular platform for scammers looking to take advantage of unsuspecting victims.
