The Mokgokong name is one that is held high in South Africa’s medical space and amongst the most notable is Professor Ephraim Thibedi Mokgokong. Professor Ephraim Mokgokong was the first black Vice-Chancellor of the former Medical University of Southern Africa (Medunsa) when it was founded in 1978, which is now known as the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University. Medunsa was established to provide medical education to black students, who were restricted from attending most medical schools because of apartheid laws. Professor Mokgokong has since gone on to train many medical doctors and has also received many awards for his contribution to the medical space over the years. In April, he received the presidential Order of Baobab honour in gold, for his impeccable contribution to medical sciences in South Africa. He joins Morio Sanyane for this week’s instalment of the leadership dialogue.
