Leadership Dialogue: Professor Wiseman Nkuhlu

Wiseman Lumkile Nkuhlu, a is trailblazer in academia, finance, and public service. Born in Cala, Eastern Cape, in 1944, Nkuhlu's academic pursuits led him to the University of Fort Hare, where he earned a BCom in 1970. Further studies at the University of Cape Town and New York University solidified his expertise, making him the first black African chartered accountant (CA) in South Africa. Transitioning from academia to practical application, Nkuhlu served as Head of the Department of Accounting at the University of Transkei, eventually ascending to Principal and Vice-Chancellor by 1987. His influence extended to economic development, notably as Chairman of the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) from 1993 to 2000. In the realm of public service, Nkuhlu's leadership shone as Chief Executive of the Independent Development Trust and Economic Advisor to the President of South Africa. Additionally, he played pivotal roles in initiatives such as the New Partnership for Africa's Development (Nepad), driving socio-economic renewal across the continent. His impact reverberated in higher education, where he chaired the Council on Higher Education, contributing significantly to institutional restructuring. Currently, he serves as KPMG South Africa’s chairman. He joins us for this week’s edition of the leadership dialogue.
