Language Corner: Siswati Proverbs (Taga)

Ugandan security forces have unlawfully targeted opposition rallies with unnecessary and excessive force and arbitrary arrests, and subjected some attendees to torture or other ill-treatment, Amnesty International said today. The organization has documented incidents in which security officers launched tear gas at peaceful crowds in Kawempe and Iganga, and pepper-sprayed and beat people. These actions were accompanied by undue movement restrictions aimed at disrupting the opposition party National Unity Platform’s (NUP) campaign rallies.  Mbuyiseni Ndlozi is in conversation with  Amnesty International researcher Uganda and Tanzania, Sikula Oniala.

The relationship between the United States and Venezuela has entered its most volatile and unprecedented phase in decades, following a dramatic escalation that has moved far beyond sanctions and diplomacy into direct military action.  In early January 2026, the United States carried out a major military operation inside Venezuelan territory, centred on Caracas and key military installations. The operation resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Mbuyisei Ndlozi is in conversation with Venezuela Ambassador to SA, Carlos Feo.

Venezuela Responds: Ambassador Addresses U.S. Raid and Maduro’s Capture 

During a press conference on 3 January, President Donald Trump declared that the US would "run" Venezuela following the overnight capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. Meanwhile, the South African government has called for an urgent convening of the United Nations Security Council, labelling the US military intervention a "manifest violation" of international law and urging the international community to respond to the crisis.  Mbuyiseni Ndlozi is in conversation with Political Economist and International Relations Expert, Prof Patrick Bond and Director of the Centre for Africa-China Studies at the University of Johannesburg, Prof David Monyae.
