Herbie Tsoaeli, fondly referred to as "Malume," is a multifaceted musician celebrated for his prowess as a bassist, composer, and arranger. Born in 1963, he is a self-taught virtuoso whose talent has been pivotal in shaping and preserving South Africa's jazz legacy. Collaborating with luminaries such as Winston Mankunku-Ngozi, Tete Mbambisa, Louis Moholo-Moholo, and Abdullah Ibrahim, Tsoaeli has not only contributed to establishing the country's jazz tradition but also ensuring its continuous evolution. Over the past years, Tsoaeli's ensembles have taken center stage at renowned festivals like the Cape Town Jazz Festival, the Berlin Jazz Festival, the Jazz and Classical Encounters Festival Volume Four in November 2022, held in Stellenbosch, and the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz in September 2023. His music transcends boundaries, offering a nuanced and heartfelt expression of the black community's experiences and musical heritage. He joins us as our special guest.
