Innovation Wednesdays: Plastic Bottles used to Build Schools

View descriptionShare

In South Africa, the issue of poor school infrastructure continues to run rife, affecting the overall quality of education. According to the Department of Basic Education, over 19 000 schools in the country do not have laboratories while over 17 000 do not have libraries and almost 4 000 continue to rely on basic pit toilets. The reality for many South African learners is that they are forced to attend school in run-down buildings and several other unpleasant circumstances. Well, an education-focused non-profit company called Khensani’s Collection has come up with a way to cater to children in Diepsloot, particularly, by building a school using 2L plastic bottles that are filled with non-recyclable plastic – otherwise known as ecobricks. Diana Musara is the CEO of Khensani’s Collection who joins Nhlanhla Sehume to explain the innovation and how it works.
