As we are well aware, South Africa is currently undergoing a water crisis. Added to the fact that the country is already water-scarce, is the reality of poorly run wastewater treatment plants, poor water quality standards which have also manifested in the spread of cholera. Well, today’s innovation is centred on bringing clean and safe water to South African communities and this is done, surprisingly, through the use of macadamia nut shells which purify water. The brain behind this innovation is Water Scientist and Founder of Kusini Water & Filters, Murendeni Mafumo who found that because South Africa is amongst the largest producers of macadamia nuts, that locally-sourced nut shells could be used to make water filters. He joins Morio Sanyane to walk us through this innovation.
