According to SME South Africa, recycling continues to be a major activity in the country, ranking among one of the most effective recycling industries in the world. In 2022, SME South Africa reported that the country recycles 46% of all plastic, which is higher than most countries, 70% of paper, 72% of metal, and 70% of glass. This bring us to today’s innovation which involves what many can equate to an ATM machine designed to take beverage containers, specifically glass, plastic bottles and aluminium cans, like how you would insert your bank card but instead of withdrawing money, it sends you a text where you can redeem digital rewards that can be spent on groceries at various stores. It is called the Cash4Trash reverse vending machine (RVM) and the innovator behind it, Mary-Ann Mandishona joins Morio Sanyaneto tell us more about it.
