Zoë Modiga is the 2023 Standard Bank Young Artist For Music and an artist who represents the present and future of African music drawing from the roots of African storytelling, jazz composition and Motown soul while creating a sound entirely her own in order to communicate an evolving African sound without losing its essence. Her love for music began at a very young age encouraged her to attend the National School of the Arts in Braamfontein, Johannesburg where she studied classical piano, clarinet and went on to later study Jazz performance at the College of Music, UCT.As an independent artist, she released her debut record “Yellow: The Novel” and sophomore album, “Inganekwane," under her label Yelloëwax. She has been awarded the Glamour Woman of the Year: Musician Game Changer Award 2023, SAMRO Overseas Scholarship Competition (2015) and has performed at celebrated festivals such as the Cape Town International Jazz and North Sea Jazz Festivals. She joins us as a guest in this week’s edition of In The Spotlight.
