Mimi Mtshali is an award-winning singer and composer who plays to audiences all over the world and holds a jazz degree in performance from UCT. She was part of afro latin jazz band Tucan Tucan led by pioneering Mozambican drummer Frank Paco and has shared some of the world’s big stages with the likes of Sibongile Khumalo, Khadja Nin, Rita Marley, Joe McBride and Lauryn Hill. Having released two albums, ‘Essence of My Soul’ and ‘My Love’ both produced by her pianist husband, Mdu Mtshali and performed extensively over the years. Lerato Mbele speaks to her about what makes a good musical relationship, her dedication to spontaneity, and more.
