The health ombud and the Office of Health Standards Compliance have urged the Gauteng Department of Health to take urgent action to address problems of poor infrastructure, staff shortages and unstable leadership at Helen Joseph Tertiary Hospital. South Africa has over 3,000 public clinics and over 470 public hospitals, as well as over 1,500 private clinics and over 260 private hospitals. Among all the provinces, Gauteng has the most healthcare facilities due to its large population and major economic activity. In this conversation, we assess the state of hospitals and clinics in the country.
