More than 8,000 healthcare workers in South Africa have lost their jobs following the withdrawal of United States (US) funding for HIV/Aids programmes, Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi confirmed on Thursday. The job losses come as a direct result of US President Donald Trump’s January 2025 announcement to withdraw the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (Pepfar) funding from South Africa’s HIV/Aids and TB programmes. Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi spoke to health minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi.
