The KwaZulu-Natal education department paid almost R40 million to ex-teachers despite high teacher unemployment. The case has now raises alarm of ghost workers being able to financially benefit from government institutions and other organizations. In 2022, About 1,159 “employees” vanished from the payroll system of the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) in a single day when the parastatal launched Operation Ziveze to crack down on ghost workers. This raises questions of why do we continue to see ghost workers in government institution and how does this level of crime/corruption go unseen?
