For over three decades and nicknamed “The Boxing Mecca” of South Africa, the boxing culture of East London/Mdantsane has produced no less than 20 world champions and more than 50 national champions. This achievement even by global standards is phenomenal. In 1994 East London became part of the province of the Eastern Cape. In 2000, East London became part of the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, consisting of King William's Town, Bhisho, and Mdantsane, and is the seat of the Metro. In this week’s Culture Corner, we talk about the boxing phenomenon in East London. Nhlanhla Sehume is conversing with South African Former Professional, Vuyani Bungu and a Boxing SA Steering Committee member, Xolile Dike.
