Culture Corner: The Roots of Family Acceptance – Lobola and Inhlawulo

View descriptionShare

As we journey through life, one thing stands out as an absolute cornerstone of stability – family acceptance. This is especially crucial when we consider situations like when a child is born out of wedlock and the ritual of "Inhlawulo" comes into play. In this tradition, the paternal family pays a symbolic amount to acknowledge the child as their own, and they embrace the child into the paternal lineage, sharing the family name. This concept also extends to marriage and the custom of lobola. Many young individuals today are choosing alternative paths, bypassing this tradition. However, truth is this: for many families, the absence of lobola or inhlawulo equates to the absence of acceptance and acknowledgment of the bride or child. On today's culture corner, we're diving deep into the history of these cultural rituals, unravelling their significance, and exploring their profound impact on family dynamics.

Cultural Expert and CEO of the Zindzi Mandela Foundation Mkhulu Nsingiza and Cultural Expert Ndabe Myeza join Nhlanhla Sehume for the conversation.
