Culture Corner: The role of uMakoti in a family

View descriptionShare

In African tradition, ukukotiza is an "induction period" into the world of marriage and its responsibilities, while the new bride gets acquainted with her in-laws where umakoti performs "bridal duties" that are domestic in nature.

However, in the new roles that men and women occupy currently, such advice might not be applicable or practical (and might even be sexist).

In this conversation, we talk about the role and responsibilities of umakoti in a family with founder of the Makoti Bootcamp, Londiwe Shezi, which is meant to equip brides with necessary life skills to help them be better makotis.
