Though seemingly insignificant, colour can have an impact on your overall mood and there is a science to it; the psychology of colour. This is mainly because different colours have distinct meanings, connotations and psychological effects across various cultures. With that being said, the understanding is that cultural differences as well as personal preference can inform how colour affects your behaviour and mood. Generally, colours like red, orange, and yellow are symbolic of feelings of passion, anger and power, while blue, green and purple on the other hand are associated with the opposite, the calm in the storm. On today’s Culture Corner we’re talking about what colour can do to one’s psyche and overall behaviour with Colour and Design Psychology Specialist Karen Haller and Lecturer and Supervisor at the South African College of Applied Psychology (SACAP), Welmari Bouwer.
