China’s annual trade surplus in goods has topped $1 trillion for the first time, with plunging exports to the United States amid a tariff war more than compensated for by shipments to other markets, new data shows. Figures released by China’s General Administration of Customs on Monday showed the trade surplus for the first 11 months of the year hit $1.08 trillion in November, as exports climbed 5.9 percent year-on-year that month, reversing a 1.1 percent decline the month prior. Mbuyiseni Ndlozi is in conversation with Research Director of the Centre for Africa- China studies, Dr Emmanuel Matambo and Economist and Director at Econometrix, Dr Azar Jammine.

A new report by the National Planning Commission (NPC) shows that there is a significant build-up of capital in the economy that is not being reinvested in gross fixed capital formation (GFCF), but which needs to be circulated through transactions to drive growth and development. 

'The Transformation of South Africa's Monetary Architecture 1983 - 2024' report assesses South Africa’s monetary architecture, which is the interconnected web of public, private and hybrid balance sheets that channel credit, allocate capital and govern investment.
