The United Nations Human Rights Council has criticised the human rights record of Botswana’s government with the institution having cited concerns over the country’s civil and political rights, including the freedom of expression and of the press. The criticism and subsequent calls for reform come as Botswana prepares for its elections in 2024 and it is understood that the issues with the country’s human rights record reflects an increased level of authoritarianism, as the government has tightened its hold on free speech while repressing dissent and even the persecution of political opponents.
