The United Democratic Movement (UDM) is described as a centre-left, social-democratic political party in South Africa. Its inception was marked by the collaboration of notable figures such as Roelf Meyer, a former leader of the National Party (who subsequently resigned from the UDM), General Bantu Holomisa, a former African National Congress and Transkei homeland leader, and John Taylor, a former member of the ANC Executive Committee. In addition to its ideological stance, the UDM is part of the governing coalition in Johannesburg, South Africa's largest Metropolitan municipality, alongside the much larger Democratic Alliance (DA) and several smaller parties. Mongameli Bobani assumed the role of Executive Mayor of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality from 2018 to 2019, becoming the first mayor from the UDM since the party's governance of King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality from 2000 to 2002. After contesting the elections in 2019, they won two seats in parliament. Party President Bantu Holomisa joins Lerato Mbele for the conversation.
