WHY SOUTH AFRICAN ORAL HISTORY MATTERS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

View descriptionShare

As South Africa prepares to celebrate Freedom Day and continues to remember important days such as Youth Day on June 16, it is important for young people to understand the history behind these national commemorations. These days are not only public holidays; they are moments for the nation to reflect on the struggles, sacrifices, and courage that helped shape the democratic South Africa we live in today. Through oral history listening to and recording the memories of those who experienced events such as Apartheid and the Soweto Uprising, young people can gain a deeper understanding of the country’s past. Oral history therefore plays a vital role in preserving these voices, ensuring that the lessons of South Africa’s journey to freedom are remembered and passed on to future generations. We are joined by Develd Monyai  the Founder of Kakoraleng heritage institute
