THE TRC'S UNFINISHED BUSINESS: THREE DECADES LATER, WHERE IS JUSTICE FOR APARTHEID-ERA VICTIMS?

South Africa's pursuit of truth and reconciliation is back in the spotlight as former president Thabo Mbeki testifies before the Khampepe Commission of Inquiry into allegations of political interference in the investigation and prosecution of apartheid-era crimes. The hearings have renewed scrutiny of why numerous cases referred through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) process were never prosecuted, leaving victims families waiting decades for answers. On Monday, Mbeki rejected allegations that his administration deliberately suppressed prosecutions, describing claims of secret meetings to shield former apartheid-era security officials as a “complete fabrication”. He has argued that the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) must explain why so many cases were not pursued.
