South Africans are living increasingly digital lives, but with that convenience comes growing concern about how personal information is collected, shared, and protected. From the rise of persistent spam calls and unsolicited marketing messages to the widespread use of data by companies and the expansion of surveillance technologies, many people are questioning whether their privacy is truly secure. Although the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) was introduced to safeguard citizens’ data rights, there is still uncertainty about how effectively it is enforced and whether it keeps up with the fast-changing digital environment.
