For many people, faith is a deeply personal matter. But should it also have a public voice? As South
Africa grapples with persistent challenges such as poverty, corruption, gender-based violence, unemployment and inequality, questions are being asked about the role of the church in shaping society beyond the pulpit. Historically, faith communities have been at the forefront of movements for justice and social change, including the struggle against apartheid. Yet today, some believe the church has become less vocal on issues affecting ordinary South Africans, while others argue that its primary responsibility remains spiritual guidance rather than public advocacy. This morning, we explore the intersection of faith and activism, asking whether Christians and churches should play a more active role in confronting social injustice and influencing the moral direction of society. Clementine Mabena is in conversation with Pastor Nkululeko Joy Matlala
