Tambo’s leadership was not forged in comfort or close to power; for decades, he led in exile as the strategic backbone and public face of the African National Congress at a time when it was banned, its structures were broken inside the country, its leaders were imprisoned or underground, and its legitimacy was constantly under attack from the apartheid state. Yet it was precisely in this environment of pressure, fragmentation, and uncertainty that his leadership came to define resilience, discipline, and purpose.
