The East London Magistrates’ Court has granted Julius Malema leave to appeal his prison sentence, but dismissed his application to appeal the conviction itself, affirming that he did break the law. Malema was sentenced to five years’ direct imprisonment after being found guilty of violating firearm laws, following viral footage of him discharging a rifle in public at an Economic Freedom Fighters rally in 2018. He has since been released on warning pending the outcome of his appeal.
