As we mark Africa Day, a moment of reflection on our shared history, progress and the
future of the continent, we turn our focus to one of the most urgent questions facing
Africa today how do we rebuild unity and prosperity in a time of deepening inequality
and fragmentation? Former President Thabo Mbeki, speaking at the 16th Annual Africa
Day Lecture, warned that despite political gains across the continent, poverty remains
deeply entrenched and continues to threaten Africa’s promise of renewal and self-
reliance. To help unpack this year’s theme “Rebuilding African Unity in an Age of
Fragmentation: Sovereignty, Solidarity and the Renewal of Institutions” we’re joined by
