The government is considering introducing a universal basic income grant for unemployed South Africans between the ages of 18 and 59. As it stands, the R350 social relief of distress grant will be paid out until October leaving many to struggle once the grant is discontinued. The deputy director general for social security Brenda Sibeko talks to Ntokozo Mazibuko about the decision to introduce the grant. Also joining in on the conversation is developmental economist, Ndumiso Hadebe and CEO at the Institute for Economic Justice, Neil Coleman who have done extensive research on the poverty lines in South Africa.
